Mediterranean Tour, Day 14: Experiencing the Charm of Nafplion, Greece

Hey there! I'm so excited to share my experience in Nafplion, Greece, the final stop on our 12-day cruise.

We arrived in Nafplion and our boat had to tender due to shallow waters, but the slow journey gave us time to soak in the anticipation. As we approached, Nafplion revealed itself as a cute town with a delightful blend of old-world charm and modern allure. Think of it as a picturesque scene straight out of a Disney movie set in Italy. The colorful shops, bustling boats, and romantic ambiance immediately captured our hearts.

As we ventured further into town, we noticed the well-preserved forts perched atop the hills. These historic landmarks, once strategic defense points, now stand as testaments to Nafplion's rich heritage.

Fun fact: Did you know that Nafplion used to be the capital of Greece? Its significance as a bustling port city attracted countless visitors over the years, including us! And if you're up for exploring beyond Nafplion, Corinth and Athens are just a stone's throw away, offering opportunities to delve deeper into Greece's history and culture.

Having ticked Athens off our list earlier in our trip, at this port we opted for a luxurious wine tasting experience that surpassed all expectations. From the elegant décor to the impressive cellar, every detail exuded sophistication. And Greece's wine-making tradition, spanning over 2,000 years, certainly didn't disappoint. We savored a variety of wines, including exquisite blends that I’d say rival those of renowned wine regions.

As our guide led us through the city, we uncovered fascinating tidbits about Nafplion's history. Did you know that this charming town is associated with Homer, the legendary storyteller? It's also the port city of Sparta, immortalized in the movie "300," and boasts ties to the mythological hero Hercules.

Exploring Nafplion in winter was a stroke of genius. With fewer crowds and pleasant weather, we had the city practically to ourselves. Strolling along cobblestone streets, gazing up at the towering fortresses, it felt like stepping back in time. And let me tell you, December in Greece is nothing short of magical.
